Friend Friday: I am built for comfort, not for speed.

Hi Sweethearts!

This weeks Friend Friday questions deal with the delicate subject of fitness.

I would like to start with a disclaimer:

“What you are about to read are my honest and spontanious responses. I have the utmost respect for people who are fit. I, however, am not.”

Do you keep some kind of fitness routine?

I follow a rigorous routine of  throwing dance offs in my living room. Why? Because I am intent on having as much fun as possible while moving about.

Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image?

In a word, no. But rapelling down a mountain (ok, fine, a wee hill) gave me a deep appreciation of the force that is gravity. Also, it gave me a chance to perfect the art of denial. I will never ever own up to those pictures of my bottom coming down from above.

When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear?

At this point I would like to direct your attention to the pictures displayed in this post, as they serve as a perfect illustration of “Anika does sporty-chic”.

Is it about functionality or fashion?

Functionality, obviously.

Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness?

Yes. I probably should stop being plus sized.

The thing is though, I am healthy. I am a vegetarian, how unhealthily can I possibly eat? (Don`t answer that.)

Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal?

That would be to take my dancing to the next level as a professional flamenco dancer ,dancing my soul and heart out in a two hour solo-performance to the fierce rythm of a drum and the clapping of hands.

Olè!

I bought this H&M dress in Brussels. It was six sizes too small, so I cut off the bottom of it and added the material to the back. It was never going to happen otherwise.

As you know I like to spread some serious love here chez moi. Recently I have been at the receiving end of a shower of love,  thanks to Stephanie of The Loudmout who very kindly featured me as her inspiration for April.  I can not tell you how much I appreciate all of your lovely comments and our conversations on twitter, sweethearts.

I feel the same way about exercise, dancing is the way to go! It’s far too joyful to even be called exercise! I walk everyday but would run only if my life depended on it!! I gotta get on this FF bus, it looks like a fun ride!!

I love that you march to the beat of your own drummer. Fitness, etc, however it’s described is a personal thing. We are the size we are. That’s it. My idea of being out of shape is someone else’s idea of being in shape. On the other hand, my idea of being in great shape is someone else’s idea of not making the grade. Who care? Be healthy, be happy in your body. I’m “usually” incredibly healthy and I only do what’s right for me.

Apparently today it included a Red Bull, a Hagen-Das ice cream bar and a bag of chips. I took my craving very seriously. It happens!

Ha! So many priceless bits in the post. I love your spunk, Anika dear. I tend to take the Joan Rivers view of fitness: “If God had wanted me to bend over He would’ve put diamonds on the floor.”

I love what you did with the dress! Your skills are out of this world. And thanks for the shout-out. You know I’m always happy to help in any way I can! xo

Thanks pumpkin! I just wrote it the way I would talk about it :D As for the picking of the diamonds, I couldn`t agree more. It is the same principle as with not skiing because there are no boutiques in the slopes. Perfect logic, and I adhere to these prinsiples in the strictest of manners. You are exellent company my dear, I am so exited for when we get to hang out outside the bloggersphere too. Happy friday to you! xx

It was really easy to let out, took five mins :) Let`s go dancing together, what do you say? I am batting my baby blues at you, how can you resist? That is a date then! :D Love, Anika

Thank you for your feedback. I will confess I found this post funny my self too, and the disclaimer was one of my fave parts. I was a little weary about how to adress this topic, so I decided to answer the questions the way I would in a conversation, and not change them afterwards. So when you who know me says it reads like me, then that is the best compliment I could have. Thank you dear! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

First – orange is your color. Seriously, it looks AMAZING on you. And I am forever in awe of your skill in re-working dresses. Can’t wait for you to open that shop of yours!

Second, I love your honesty. I find it quite refreshing that you don’t hide who you are or what you believe in. Thank you for being YOU – we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Thank you so much darling friend! That is the thing about not having worn colours for so many years, each one that works on me is a revelation :) Thank you for your encouragement, I am getting there!

As for my honesty, I mean, how was I going to get away with this topic without being honest? I only hoped my answers wouldn`t be read as sarcastic. The thing about honesty is, I am not so worried anymore about being able to handle jugdement. I know that I will be able to handle it, so therefore I just let it rip. Volim te ljubavi.

1. Ask and you shall receive.
2. Thank you so much Vahni, I was secretly hoping you would come on over because I knew you would like it! I owe a lot to you in terms of getting on with my blogging, one of the things going to your blog helps me do is center my self, and really check with my self if I feel my content and layout is up to par. If no, then it must change and I must learn.
3. I have been dancing flamenco for years, and just might. Will invite you to the opening show.
4. I love you right back and hope you enjoy yours too, once you catch up on the sleep you lost due to being royally romantic.

Mwuah!

Val and I were talking today actually, about how creative you are. Really. We were in a London store literally betting you could buy a whole heap and absolutely transform things.
I had a fun day with the girls, thank you.

lovely answers! i LOVE flamenco!!!!!! i think it’s so cool that you love it too. it’s such a gorgeous and passionate dance.

you know… i used to hate the gym. like, LOATHE it. now i love the gym. go figure! but my point is… when i used to hate the gym, i absolutely refused to go. and the times when i was coaxed into going by other people i always had the worst time. i wasn’t feeling it! how could i possibly get anything positive out of it?! so that’s the thing… whenever people start getting all “oh you SHOULD be doing going to a gym” i can always think back to that time in my life and remember how absolutely torturous it was. no, there’s nothing wrong with being into it and being fit and all that jazz. but forcing it and hating every minute of it… that’s just no way to live.

anywho! that’s my two cents. =P

Hi sweetheart, I absolutely agree with your cents! It is important for me to be able to lead an active life, and that motivation helps me make good choices in terms of lifestyle. When I am working out I love it, if I am doing something that I feel confident and strong doing. It is all about finding what works for you, with the motivation and pride that comes from within. Thank you so much for being your wonderful, wise self. Love to you! xx

Dancing is great exercise! I go for really long walks and sometimes I even jog. My husband’s been making me lift weights – I hate it.

I think what’s important is keeping fit by moving your body, how you do it is up to you. And you look fabulous! I love your orange dress. I’m impressed that you altered it up 6 sizes! That’s not easy.

Love,
Heather

I will only lift weights if they are connected to a check/cinnamon bun/new handbag that drops down as I lift the weights. I completely agree about being active, I want to be fit enough to live my life the way I want to, and when I dance etc I feel happy. How are you my dear? Sending you lots of love and hugs. xx

You look fantastic. Thank you for dealing with this subject honestly and with style! You rock. I danced 4 days a week/4 hours a night for about 7 years throughout high school and university, and I was plus sized the whole time. I would say my fitness is not bad, but people probably assume I couldn’t keep up with them just from looking at me… http://www.curvycanadian.blogspot.com
